St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland and a secular holiday in America that honors Saint Patrick, a Christian missionary who converted the Emerald Isle to Christianity in the AD 400’s. The interesting thing about St. Patrick was that he was mostly an ignored figure at the time of his passing but over the years wild stories and legends were born around his legacy. These stories led to a renewed fascination and respect of Ireland’s patron Saint.
Nowadays, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by everyone – Irish or not – and has become a day of great celebrations. One idea behind the popularity of the holiday in modern times is that the day falls during Lent, when you are supposed to give up alcohol and certain foods. This day was given leniency by the Church so everyone could have great feasts and honor the memory of St. Patrick with much revelry and so it is the one day during Lent in which you can imbibe. Regardless of those intentions, the day is still filled with much tradition and joy for all who tip their hats towards Saint Patrick.
