In Switzerland, they celebrate Spring by burning a snowman at the stake. In Thailand, they host a massive water fight festival and in England they have a cheese rolling competition.
For centuries and beyond, Spring has been celebrated around the globe in every different culture and religion. Some cultures believed that Winter ushered in a desolate silence full of evil spirits and that by hosting annual traditions and welcoming Spring, you could rid those spirits from causing harm or bad luck to you, your loved ones and your livelihood.
Spring signifies a new beginning, an end to a hard, rough road and so many cultures believe that in order to bring good luck and blessings upon them, the season change must start with much revelry and glad tidings. Others simply want to celebrate the warmer weather and the fact that cold, bitter weather has subsided.
No matter the why or the how, festivals and traditions commemorating the Spring season are a worldwide event even today. We may not all understand each other’s customs and beliefs but we all share in the hope of new beginnings and the end of bitter weather!
